RESULTS ON FIRE BLIGHT RESISTANCE IN THE PILLNITZ APPLE BREEDING PROGRAMME

The objectives of the apple breeding programme are high fruit quality in combination with different resistances to the economically important diseases.
The best ones of the new bred cultivars have a high resistance level to scab, mildew, fire blight, bacterial canker, red spider mite and winter frost as well as good fruit quality and stable and high productivity.
The mostly used donors for these characteristics are conventional cultivars like ‘Golden Delicious’, ‘Clivia’, ‘Alkmene’, some new Pi- and Re-cultivars(R) and clones of Malus floribunda. In crossings for fire blight resistance Pi-A-44,14, ‘Remo’, ‘Rewena’, ‘Reanda’, Pi-AS-44,14 and others were used.
They produce a high percentage of seedlings with a remarkable level of fire blight resistance.
New fire blight resistant cultivars from the Pillnitz breeding programme are ‘Remo’, ‘Rewena’, ‘Rene’, ‘Realka’, ‘Reanda’, ‘Rebella’, ‘Regine’. The three fold resistant cultivars (scab, mildew and fire blight): ‘Rebella’, ‘Remo’, ‘Rewena’, ‘Reanda’ – possess a high level of fire blight resistance in growing shoots and in the flowers.
These cultivars transmit their high degree of resistance to fire blight into their progenies.
