Abstract
Transgenic shoots of two varieties of apple were produced in vitro by Agrobacterium mediated transfer of a heterologous gene encoding for an antimicrobial peptide (AMP). After analysis for the presence of the AMP gene in the genome by PCR and ELISA, in vitro plants were transferred to ex vitro conditions by micrografting.
The plants were tested for increased resistance to the apple disease scab.
Analysis of the transgenic plants with ELISA indicates variable expression of the transgene.
Preliminary results suggest that some lines were more resistant after artificial scab infection compared to the untransformed control plants.
