SESSION D: WARNING SYSTEMS, SIMULATION MODELS

1.1 Greater co-ordination and collaboration is needed in the research and development of forecasting models and warning systems at all levels.
Too many researchers are “doing their own thing” (e.g. scab models). Much more could be achieved if research was carefully planned and co-ordinated on an international level.
Systems analysis is a useful tool in such planning.

1.2 Modelling has great potential, but greater biological inputs are needed and greater efforts to ensure technology transfer which is often poor.
Met networks have much to offer, but the right balance between the localness of stations and extrapolation between stations needs to be determined.
Weather forecasts need to be incorporated to make models more useful.

1.3 Pheromone trapping is a valuable approach, but attention needs to be devoted to identifying and exploiting the pheromones of fruit pests other than Lepidoptera.
