Abstract
Lime induced iron chlorosis is a physiological disorder caused by elevated apoplastic pH-values due to alkaline nutritional conditions on calcareous soils.
CULTAN plants take up excessive amounts of sulphate from (NH4)2SO4– depots, which previously were acidified by H2SO4 to pH 2, because roots by ammonium are attracted to the depot area.
We mark the sulphate taken up as (NH4)2SO4 or H2SO4 as active sulphate because of its ability to neutralise excessive cations within the plants.
Consequently carboxylation processes within the plants are relieved and rises of the apoplastic pH-values are prevented.
