Abstract
Growth and production potential for crops in general, and for tropical fruit crops in particular, are determined by natural physical conditions related to specific soil and climatic parameters, AND by human technology (or management) to tap this natural potential.
In this paper a review is given of the most important climatic and soil conditions which affect the production of banana, litchi, mango, pineapple, papaya and others.
Using the FAO system for land evaluation, whereby suitability classes can be defined through a matching of critical growth parameters with current land attributes, a land rating can be developed identifying hereby the best suitable areas for those crops.
