RAPID PROPAGATION OF ORNITHOGALUM USING LEAF CUTTINGS

Abstract
Ornithogalum is a flowering bulbous plant.
It is a very popular cut flower, with renewed interest from the European market in the yellow and orange South African species.
In vitro propagation is currently used for propagation, but the industry is also requiring cheaper in vivo multiplication.
The mature vegetative leaves of three non-flowering Ornithogalum lines were used: E263-1 (O. thyrsoides), “Tipper” (O. thyrsoides hybrid) and A7 (O. thyrsoides hybrid). The effect of two indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) concentrations were tested in combination with the effect of bottom heat and two soil mixtures.
The largest number of bulbs were produced in the absence of bottom heat and being treated with 2 000 ppm IBA. The largest bulbs were produced with 24,5°C bottom heat and 1 000 ppm IBA.
