Abstract
A research was conducted to compare the response of two grasses, elytrigia (Agropyron elongatum) and vetiveria (Vetiveria zizanioides) to irrigation with 40% diluted seawater; plants were grown in 20-litres lysimeters and daily drip irrigated with excess water.
Fresh and dry matter response to salinity were somewhat different with the two grasses: while in both cases fresh and dry matter significantly decreased with an increasing salinity content, elytrigia could better survive higher salinity, since no plant perished.
A significant difference was found in the osmotic regulation systems of the two plants, with different rates of cations, proteins and monosaccharids accumulation, giving evidence of different tolerance mechanisms.
