DENDRANTHEMA SPECIES AS CHRYSANTHEMUM GENETIC RESOURCES

Genetic resources of chrysanthemum include: 1) core species of the genus Dendranthema and chrysanthemum cultivars; 2) partially compatible related species, and 3) other related species.
The core species, genus Dendranthema, consists of about 50 species distributed mainly in East Asia, with about 20 species being native to Japan.
Some morphological and physiological characteristics of Dendranthema species native to Japan are discussed.
Each species shows unique leaf and flower morphology with considerable intra- and interspecific variations.
All tested species flower under 10 and 12 hr day-lengths, but not 14 hr, at 25° C. Each species requires a different minimum temperature for flowering in winter.
The reciprocal crosses between chrysanthemum and Dendranthema species are possible when the appropriate genotype is carefully chosen.
The progenies of summer-autumn flowering type chrysanthemum flowered earlier than those of autumn flowering type in all combinations.
Genetic erosion of wild chrysanthemums is serious in Japan, and thus their investigation and conservation is an urgent issue.
