Abstract
Ornamental peach (Prunus persica (L.) Batsch, Rosaceae) is native to China and widely distributes from sub-tropical to temperate regions.
For the continued success of breeding new ornamental peach, it is imperative to further collect its germplasm and investigate its characteristics and preservation.
In the survey conducted in over 30 cities in China and Japan, ornamental peaches could be classified into 2 Branches, 5 Groups, and 11 Forms.
Beijing Botanical Garden has 55 cultivars and more than 5000 ornamental peach plants, thus becoming the largest ornamental peach collection site in China.
Beijing Botanical Garden is also well known by its ornamental peach and gained popularity by offering the Ornamental Peach Festival yearly since 1989. Researches in Beijing Botanical Garden and Beijing Forestry University have been summarized and two new early blooming cultivars breeding by three early-flowering parents have been released.
