Abstract
The agronomic behavior of seven hybrids obtained by directed crossing and selection on progeny from `Clementina´ seeds were preselected by fruit characteristics in a comparative assay and planted in deep red ferralitic soil at a distance of 4 x 6 m.
The hybrids studied were: `Valentina´ (Clementina x early Valencia), `Clemelina´ (Clementina x Hamlin), `Maribel´ (Clementina x Shamouti), 16/73, 16/10 and 16/49 selections (obtained from Clementina seeds freely pollinated) and the 17/6 selection (Clementina x early Valencia). Five of the seven selections, showed the best characteristics. `Maribel´, although a tangor, has fruits of tangerine type, big and easy to peel, early ripening and was the most productive selection. `Clemelina´ is globe-shaped similar to an orange, easy to peel, ripens in September and attains an orange coloring.
It is as productive as `Maribel´; the tangor. `Valentina´ has fruits of excellent quality, midseason ripening and is less productive than the former.
The 16/73 selection is also productive, its fruits are oblique, smooth skinned and the color is pale yellowish.
It is difficult to peel.
The 16/10 selection produces large-sized tangerines with tender skinned segments, palatable and not very intense but brilliant orange color that gives it good eye appeal.
The selections 16/49 and 17/6 were less promising.
