GENETIC INTERACTION BETWEEN DIFFERENT TISSUES IN CITRUS PERICLINAL CHIMERAS

Abstract
Previous work on citrus periclinal chimeras NFF (layer constitution L1-L2-L3 = N-F-F) and FNN (L1-L2-L3 = F-N-N), produced by grafting of Citrus sinenis cv.
Fuhuhara orange and C. nastsudaidai cv.
Kawano natsudadiai, indicated that the leaf and fruit characters of the two chimeras were significantly modified or even altered by the interactions between genotypically different tissues.
The present work on the floral organs indicated that the “exogenous” epidermis imposed the similar influence on the chimeral floral organs as it did on the leaf and fruit characters.
Comparison of the chimeral fruit characters in three successive years revealed the stability of the interaction effects on the concerned characters.
Peroxidase analysis and STS (sequence tagged site) marker analysis in the FNN derived progenies indicated that progeny variant had been induced during the FNN fruit development.
All these suggested that chimeras could be of great value to plant breeding by providing unique and stable breeding resource
