Abstract
The effects of shade (40% shade and 60% shade) on leaf photosynthetic characteristic in Chieh-qua (Benincasa hispida Cogn.var. Chieh-qua How. cv.
Jiangxin) were studied under plastic greenhouse conditions in Guangzhou, China.
The concentration of chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, total chlorophyll in leaves increased with increasing shade, but the ratio of chlorophyll a/b decreased.
Net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, transpiration rate, and intracellular CO2 concentration, which were measured under the same light intensity, decreased gradually increasing shade.
With increasing shade, F0, Fv/Fm and Fm/F0 increased, and
PSII,
and
decreased.
The increase of Fv/Fm indicated that photochemical turnover efficiency of photo-system II enhanced with shade.
The decrease of
PSII indicated that the efficiency of PSII electron transportation decreased.
The decrease of
and
d indicated that photochemical quenching and non-photochemical quenching also decreased with increasing shade.
