FACTORS INFLUENCING THE GROWTH RATE AND SEASONAL FLOWER YIELD OF CARNATIONS

A two-year study shows the relationship of hours of sunlight and temperature on the growth rate and development of carnation flowers in commercial greenhouses in San Diego, California.

The use of supplemental heat, carbon dioxide, and other techniques for increasing flower yield and income to carnation growers will also be discussed.
Other techniques will include pruning of one-year old plants, harvesting methods, disease control, planting and pinching methods.

The discussion introduces data from several experiments plus a general review of other factors which influence flower production relationship to market demand for flowers and income maximization to commercial growers.
