RECENT VIEWS ON CARNATION CONSERVATION AND TRANSPORT

Carnation flowers (var.
Scania, Le Rêve) harvested in young buds offer the following advantages compared to usually harvested carnations : – a longer conservation at low temperature (12–14 weeks at O°C instead of 3 weeks)- a better resistance to the transport conditions.

To get prematurely harvested carnations to open, one must supply them with a blooming solution and place them under favorable physical conditions (temperature : 23–25°C, light 1000 lux for 12h/day). A blooming room based on these considerations is proposed.

For the consumer, moreover, the vase life of the flowers is increased by a preservative solution.

These data on the carnations complete the elements of our system for treatment of the cut flowers.
