GROWTH ANALYSIS AND BIOMASS DISTRIBUTION OF ‘UNAPAL-MARAVILLA’ TOMATO

Abstract
The biomass accumulation and growth indices (leaf area index, crop growth rate, relative growth rate, net assimilation rate and leaf area ratio) of ‘UNAPAL-Maravilla’ tomato were determined at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Palmira Campus.
The trial was planted in a tunnel covered with fine net and 10 samplings were taken at 1-week intervals: the first 5 days after transplanting (dat) and the last one 66 dat.
Cultivar ‘UNAPAL-Maravilla’ presented a classical sigmoid growth curve with three well-defined phases: 1) the logarithmic phase from transplanting through 18 dat, which is characterized by the high accumulation of relative biomass based on plant size, 2) the linear phase of growth, which occurs between 19 and 59 dat and presents constant accumulation of biomass, and 3) the senescence phase, which begins 60 dat when the daily biomass accumulation begins to decrease.
The leaves presented the highest biomass accumulation, followed by the stems, petioles, roots, and flowers.
Flowering began at 32 dat and fructification began at 7 days after flowering.
The highest leaf area index occurs at 52 dat, which is close to harvest time, indicating the early maturity of this cultivar.
