Abstract
A begomovirus transmitted by the whitefly Bemisia tabaci to tomato in the Cauca Valley of Colombia was identified as Tomato yellow mosaic virus (ToYMV), based on a 91% nucleotide sequence identity when compared to the DNA-A component of ToYMV-Guadeloupe.
The controlled exposure of tomato lines FLA 653-3-1-0, FLA 496-11-6-1-0, FLA 456-4, and FLA 478-6-3-1-11 to viruliferous B. tabaci whiteflies showed that FLA 456-4 was susceptible to virus infection and significant viral DNA accumulation in the absence of noticeable symptoms.
On the contrary, FLA 653-3-1-0, FLA 496-11-6-1-0, and FLA 478-6-3-1-11 showed mild symptoms and viral DNA was barely detectable in most inoculated plants.
These three lines also possessed desirable agronomic characteristics regarding fruit quality and yield.
