Abstract
The genetic introgression of the resistance to the tomato fruit borer present in Solanum habrochaites var. glabratum introduction PI 134418 into Solanum lycopersicum UNAPAL-Maravilla was performed at the National University of Colombia, Palmira Campus.
A positive, highly significant correlation was found between the damage caused by the insect pest and fruit weight.
However, resistance to the pest was found to decrease with successive backcrosses to recover fruit weight in UNAPAL-Maravilla (recurrent parent). Trichomes and average number of fruits per cluster did not affect pest infestation and fruit damage caused by the insect.
However, average fruit weight did have an important effect because pest damage tended to increase with increasing average fruit weight.
Backcrossing was effective in breaking the correlation between average fruit weight and resistance to the insect.
Recombinant plants RC2 were obtained that showed resistance to the tomato fruit borer as well as an average fruit weight between 45.1 and 68.6 g.
