Abstract
According to climate change, temperature will increase with 1 to 2°C, wind will get stronger, and precipitation will be more intense.
Two experiments were performed (in the period 1995 to 2001) with two raspberry cultivars to study the effect of increased temperature on yield and vegetative growth, and alternative treatments to decrease temperature in the raspberry plant canopy.
A temperature increase was induced by means of a permanent plastic sheet over a raspberry stand, and various water-cooling systems were installed to examine the effect of temperature of the canopy surface.
In both experiments the influence of temperature on yield, fruit weight, and vegetative parameters were evaluated.
Indeed the yearly average temperature increased with 0.5 to 1°C, and on hot summer days, it even increased with 8 to 10°C under the plastic cover.
In the years studied, yield, fruit weight, and growth index increased.
Among the cooling systems drip irrigation (control), spraying the plantation by means of high installed drip irrigation at 60 cm height, and overhead sprinkling (at 250 cm height) were compared.
The overhead mist sprinkling was the most effective.
The temperature of the canopy surface was reduced by 8 to 10°C, but there was no effect on the air temperature in the plantation.
There were no cultivar effects on yield, fruit size, or growth parameters in the years studied.
