Abstract
The breeding programme of the Fruit Growing Institute in Bulgaria for the improvement of plum cultivars started in 1987. The major aim of the programme was the development of new plum cultivars highly tolerant or resistant to Sharka (Plum pox virus), having good sensory characteristics of the fruits and good economic indices.
Initially the parent cultivars ‘Stanley’, ‘President’, ‘Pacific’, ‘Serdika’, ‘Reine Claude’, ‘Reine Claude Hramova’ and ‘Scolduse’, all of them belonging to Prunus domestica species, were included in the programme for establishing F1 hybrid progeny.
Hybrid populations obtained by open pollination of the ‘President’, ‘Stanley’, ‘Reine Claude’ and ‘Scolduse’ were obtained and studied.
Elite No. 5-174 (‘Ulpia’) and elite No. 6-51 (‘Sineva’) showed the best economic characteristics.
Their fruits ripen shortly one after the other in the second decade of August, about two weeks before the fruits of ‘Stanley’ and more than a month before ‘President’. The fruits of ‘Ulpia’ are 43.01 х 40.15 х 39.03 mm in size and 42.06 g in weight.
Their shape is oval, the skin is violet-blue.
Fruit flesh is golden-yellow, moderately juicy, gentle, sweet, slightly acid.
It is freestone and the stone is small, representing 4.87% of the total fruit weight.
The tree growth is moderate, the crown is loose and the cultivar is highly productive and tolerant to PPV. The fruits of ‘Sineva’ are 48.77 х 42.18 х 43.53 mm in size and 51.40 g in weight.
The shape is oval-elongated, the skin is violet-blue.
Fruit flesh is golden-yellow, moderately juicy, very sweet, slightly acid.
It is freestone and the stone is medium in size, representing 3.96% of the total fruit weight.
The tree growth is moderate, the crown is loose.
The cultivar is highly productive and highly tolerant to PPV.
