Abstract
Spain is the 8th largest world plum producer, with an average annual plum production of approximately 169,000 t over the last ten years.
Within Spain, Extremadura is a relevant plum producing region, in which plum growing is rapidly expanding, as reflected in the increase of cultivated area in recent years.
During this time, the surface planted in this region increased from 959 ha in 2000 to more than 3,800 ha in 2006. This situation is paralleled by an important renewal of plant material and the introduction of new cultivars from different countries.
In this work, the present situation of Japanese plum production in Extremadura and Spain is analyzed with remarks on the main factors affecting plum culture and cultivar choice.
