INVESTIGATION ON COLD STORAGE CAPACITY OF EARLY AND MID RIPENING APPLE CULTIVARS OF IRAN

Abstract
Genetic cultivar attitude in cold storage makes an important contribution to the preservation of qualitative and quantitative properties of apples [Malus sylvestris (L.) Mill. var. domestica (Borkh) Mansf]. The national cultivars collection, located in the Kamal abad Reserch station (Karaj-Iran) contains 108 commercial apples.
The intent of this research was individuation of those native early and mid ripening cultivars that benefit genetically from an acceptable storage capacity in order to improve the economy of the fresh consumption market.
Former researches were focused more on late native cultivars.
In order to determine the cold storage capacity of 5 early ripening: ‘Ghandak-e Kashan’, ‘Golab-e Isfahan’, ‘Haji-e Karaj’, ‘Kompooti’, ‘Golab-e Sahne’ and 5 mid ripening: ‘Sheikh Ahmad’, ‘Heydarzadeh’, ‘Mashhad-e Nouri’, ‘Assali’, ‘Ozark Gold’ (imported), apples were harvested in physiological stage of maturation.
The harvested fruits were tested in all quantitative and qualitative characters and stored in a cold room at +1°C, organized in a Complete Random Design with three replications, in 2008. The variations in weight, flesh firmness, chemical properties (pH, TA, TSS and TSS/TA) were regularly measured together with a panel test in monthly intervals.
The results showed that the native early and mid ripening cultivars ‘Assali’ and ‘Mashad Nouri’ after 4 temporal intervals exhibited 5% weight loss, but some chemical properties like TA decreased respectively 81 and 31%. ‘Golab-e Isfahan’ and ‘Mashad Nouri’ showed the highest changes in TSS with 8% increment and ‘Ghandak-e Kashan’ was known as the weakest cultivar demonstating 45 days of cold storage within the cultivars.
