INFLUENCE OF PLANTING TIME AND IBA ON ROOTING AND GROWTH OF POMEGRANATE (PUNICA GRANATUM L.) ‘GANESH’ CUTTINGS

Abstract
An experiment was conducted to study the influence of planting time and IBA (Indole Butyric Acid) on rooting and vegetative growth on cuttings of pomegranate Ganesh during the year 2007-2008. Uniform sized cuttings of pencil thickness,
20 cm long with three or four buds were taken from healthy pomegranate trees in December-January and planted on 15 December and 15 January.
Growth regulator (IBA) was applied by adopting quick dip (for 5 s) and slow dip (for 24 h) techniques.
The respective cuttings were treated with varying concentrations of IBA i.e., 0, 50, 100 and 200 ppm for slow dip and 1000, 1500 and 2000 ppm for quick dip techniques and planted on different times which showed its effect on sprouting, rooting behavior, plant growth, etc.
Treated cuttings were synchronized with better root formation and shoot growth potentialities.
Moreover, IBA 100 and 2000 ppm were found to be most efficacious in encouraging rooting and invigorating shoot growth.
The cuttings treated with IBA 100 ppm (slow dip) and 2000 ppm (quick dip) planted in the month of January exerted positive effect with regard to sprouting percentage, rooting percen¬tage, number of roots per cutting, longest root, root weight, plant height and shoot girth.
The cuttings planted during the month of December also resulted in good sprouting.
