Abstract
Horticultural crops, because of their high moisture content are inherently more liable to deteriorate especially under tropical conditions.
Losses during postharvest operations due to improper storage and handling are enormous and can range from 10-40%. With the advent of biotechnological techniques resulting in the use of molecular markers and transformation techniques avenues have been opened for reducing postharvest losses and for improving the quality of horticultural crops.
Pomegranate and other minor fruits are neglected even though they are rich in vitamins, minerals and medicinal property.
Biotechnological interventions will help in improvement of the neglected fruit crops by adopting various techniques like Plant tissue culture, molecular markers and genetic transformation.
The biotechnological developments in pomegranate and minor fruits will be discussed in this presentation.
