Abstract
Aonla or Indian gooseberry (Emblica officinalis Gaertn.), a member of the family Euphorbiaceae, is an important indigenous minor fruit crop.
It is quite suitable for semi-arid regions and can withstand salinity and drought conditions.
The fruit is highly nutritive and the richest source of ascorbic acid after Barbados cherry.
The fruits are used in controlling diarrhoea, jaundice, cough, chronic dysentery, etc.
Fruits are commercially used for making preserves, jam, pickles, candy, sauce, dried chips, etc.
To study the influence of calcium chloride and calcium nitrate on physico-chemical composition of aonla Banarasi, the present experiment was carried out in the Department of Horticulture, C.S. Azad University of Agriculture and Technology, Kanpur-208002 (U.P.), India, for two successive years i.e., 2006 and 2007. There were seven treatments comprising three levels each of calcium chloride and calcium nitrate (0.5, 1.0 and 1.5%) including a control, replicated thrice in randomized block design, taking a single plant as a unit treatment.
Spraying was done on 25 August during both the years.
From various observations recorded, it was concluded that the foliar application of calcium nitrate at 1.5% increased the weight of fruit (39.93 and 38.9 g), volume of fruit (34 and 33 cc), pulp weight (29.25 and 28.20 g) and reduced the stone weight (2.05 and 1.85 g) and as far as the chemical quality characters are concerned, calcium nitrate at 1.5% also increased the TSS (18.9 and 18.0°Brix), total sugar (10.8 and 11.05%), and ascorbic acid (563.11 and 561.11 mg per 100 g of pulp) and reduced titratable acidity (1.8 and 1.7%) content of fruits as compared to the control.
