TRANSMISSION OF CHILLING AND HEAT REQUIREMENTS FOR FLOWERING IN ALMOND AND DEVELOPMENT OF QTLS

Abstract
Transmission of chilling and heat requirements for breaking dormancy and flowering were studied in a F1 almond progeny of 167 seedlings from a cross between the late-flowering French selection ‘R1000’ and the early-flowering Spanish cultivar ‘Desmayo Largueta’. The seedlings showed a wide range of chilling requirements for flowering (chill units, CU) between the progenitors ‘Desmayo Largueta’ (158 CU) and ‘R1000’ (741 CU), with a narrower range of heat requirements.
Late-flowering seedlings finished dormancy 40 days after the earliest progenitor, ‘Desmayo Largueta’. The results indicated that flowering time in almond is mainly a consequence of the chilling requirement for a particular genotype, with heat requirement having a smaller effect.
Both chilling and heat requirements for breaking dormancy showed quantitative transmission in the progeny studied.
QTL (quantitative trait loci) analysis was performed to establish linkage between SSR markers and chilling and heat requirements in an almond genetic linkage map.
The development of efficient marker-assisted selection (MAS) strategies for almond and other Prunus breeding programs are also discussed.
