Abstract
An ethnobotanical study was done on medicinal plants of Sabalan Mountain in Iran, an area in which no earlier ethnobotanical research has been done.
In the study region, which focused on the southern portion of the mountain, five informants were interviewed, ages of 50-80, selected for their knowledge of medicinal plants.
These individuals were asked to show the medicinal plants and supply the local name.
The species mentioned by the informants were taxonomically identified.
In total, 111 species belonging to 87 genera and 33 families were recognized in the region as having medicinal properties.
The most dominant families in this study for medicinal use were the Lamiaceae and Asteraceae with 19 species each.
An integrated approach for domestication, cultivation, conservation, and isolation of active constituents for development of new therapeutics, standardization and validation of known herbal medicines is needed.
