Abstract
The seeds of Chenopodium album, a common weed, have been reported to possess a sperm enhancer, rejuvenating and revitalizing effect in ancient Ayurvedic literature on Indian medicines.
In the present study, ethanolic extract of seeds of this plant was evaluated for its effect on anabolic activity, sexual behavior and in vitro sperm count in male rats.
Administration of ethanolic extract at a concentration of 200 mg/kg b.w. resulted in pronounced anabolic effect in treated animals as evidenced by weight gain in body and reproductive organs.
Sexual behavior and performance were also markedly improved as reflected in reduction of mount, intromission and post ejaculatory latency.
Heterosexual attraction score and mount frequency also enhanced upon treatment.
Furthermore, the extract could also preserve and enhance in vitro sperm count significantly upon administration of C. album extract.
Hence this study, provides scientific evidence for use of seeds of C. album for development of herbal preparation based on C. album extract useful in treatment of oligospermia and azoospermia.
