Abstract
The income derived by the tribals of Mandwi block of West Tripura district from some selected medicinal plants were studied.
The selected medicinal plants are Batema (Amorphophallus campanulatus Blume), Muia (tender shoots of Bambusa spp.), Komliha (Ipomoea reptans Poir) and Samsota (Centella asiatica). The respondents are selected from the purposively selected block through two stage random sampling method.
The total number of selected respondents from all the categories was pooled to 69. The study reveals that 23.47% of their gross annual income is received from the medicinal plants collected from the forests followed by agriculture along with forests and other non-agricultural activities with 60.80 and 15.73% respectively.
The study further reveals high degrees of Gini Concentration Ratio for all the categories of tribal in the block.
The pooled Gini Concentration Ratio of 0.63 indicates a high degree of disparities of income distribution among the tribal households of the block, which supports the hypothesis that large disparity of income distribution exists in the tribal pockets.
