Abstract
Whenever the curiosity of the present day investigator probes into the past and brings to light even fragmentary information on the ingenious methods of our ancestors, it makes a fascinating study.
In India the reference to the curative properties of some herbs in the Rigveda seem to be the earliest records of use of plants in medicine though very brief.
Far more detailed account is available in the Atharva veda.
By the large in India, medical needs of the rural population are catered to mostly by the Indian system of medicine-Ayurveda, Siddha and Unani.
Plants are natural and traditional sources of medication and the use of herbs has been the mainstay of therapeutics in spite of enormous changes in therapeutic practices
