Abstract
A function of boron (B) in higher plants is proposed.
A B-polysaccharide complex was isolated and purified from plant cell walls and the sugar moiety was identified as rhamnogalacturonan II (RGII). In this complex B crosslinks two pectic polysaccharide chains through borate-aspiosyl ester bonding, and this bridge is strengthened by Ca2+. That is, the pectic network is assembled with B and Ca2+ as a nail and screw.
Deprivation of B from culture solutions brings about cell death, which is mediated by excessive production of reactive-oxygen molecules, such as hydrogen peroxide.
The link between incomplete cell wall and hydrogen peroxide evolution should be examined further.
