Abstract
The effect of nitrogen (N) concentration on growth, leaf nutrient concentration, flowering and fruit quality of off-season longan was studied.
The experiment was carried out on 9- to 10-year-old longan trees Daw, having a four-meter canopy width and growing at the Agricultural Technology Research Institute in Rajamangala University of Technology Lanna (RMUTL). The experimental design was a completely randomized one with 6 N treatments: 0, 40, 60, 160, 320 and 640 g N/tree.
Increasing N application tended to increase leaf area, fresh weight and dry weight.
However, the higher N rates (320 and 640 g N/tree) resulted in a lower flowering percentage, whereas N rates had no effect on the number of fruits and fruit weight per panicle.
In contrast, fruit size, pericarp thickness and aril thickness were lower with increasing N rates.
Leaf N concentration increased with increasing N fertilizer doses, but leaf P (p<0.05) and Ca (p<0.05) decreased with the rate of N applied.
However, the different N treatments had no effect on leaf K and Mg concentrations.
