Effect of photoperiod on flowering in everbearing strawberry ‘Natsuakari’

Abstract
Out-of-season production of strawberry (Fragaria ×ananassa) using everbearing cultivars has been of interest in Japan recently.
To better understand flowering physiology of everbearing strawberry, the effect of photoperiod on flower induction of everbearing cultivar ‘Natsuakari’ was investigated.
Runner plants of ‘Natsuakari’ were treated with a combination of photoperiods (14, 17, 20, or 24 h) delivered over different durations (1, 2, 3 or 4 weeks). After treatments, plants were grown under natural day length and inflorescences were counted three months after the start of the treatments. 100% of plants flowered when grown under 20 or 24 h photoperiods for all durations.
Two weeks were needed to induce flowers completely for the 17-h treatment, and fewer than 20% of plants flowered in the 14-h treatment.
The longer duration of treatment tended to induce more inflorescences for 17, 20 and 24-h photoperiods.
The 14-h photoperiod induced few inflorescences regardless the treatment duration.
From those results, it seems possible to control flowering of ‘Natsuakari’ using a long-day treatment.
