Abstract
Data on per cent flowering, fruit size and yield of ‘Delicious’ apple were obtained from cooperators at more than 30 locations, primarily in the United States and Canada, over a 3 year period and were compared with temperatures and solar radiation for possible associations.
Additional data were obtained on the effects of strains and rootstocks.
Correlation coefficients between fruit set vs. mean temperatures before, during or immediately after flowering were low and not statistically significant.
Values for fruit set vs. solar radiation (accumulated g-calories per cm2) were higher, but too few data were available for conclusions to be drawn.
Fruit set was affected by both strain and rootstock, and was increased by applying aminoethoxyvinylglycine (AVG), an inhibitor of ethylene biosynthesis.
