Abstract
A National Strategy and Action Plan for plant genetic resources for food and agriculture is presented for Madagascar.
The strategy focuses on priority food and cash crops as well as crop wild relatives and forest genetic resources.
The current status of conservation and sustainable use of plant genetic resources in Madagascar and the existing policy frameworks have been assessed and described.
The vision of the strategy is that Malagasy people are aware of the value of PGRFA for their conservation and sustainable use so as to ensure their own food and nutrition security, to conquer new markets for present and future generations.
The strategy’s mission is that by 2023 Madagascar will be able to manage its own PGRFA in order to contribute to agricultural development and food security to benefit the local populations and the future generations.
The strategy has five strategic objectives on conservation, utilization, policy framework, and strengthening capacities and awareness.
For each strategic objective there is a corresponding component that describes the recommended activities.
Furthermore, the institutional set up, communication plan, and budgets and resources required for implementing the National Strategy and Action Plan in Madagascar are discussed.
