Selection of Opuntia spp. accessions with resistance to false cochineal carmine (Dactylopius opuntiae)

Abstract
The false cochineal carmine (Dactylopius opuntiae Cockerell, 1896) is the main insect pest of Opuntia spp. in Brazil.
The crop genetic improvement program aims to select accessions with resistance to the attack of this pest.
Thus, the objective was to select accessions of Opuntia spp. with resistance to false cochineal carmine.
The survey was conducted from February 2019 to March 2020 at the Active Germplasm Bank (BAG) of Opuntia spp. of the Paraíba Company Research, Rural Extension and Land Regularization (EMPAER), Pendência Experimental Station, Soledade, Paraíba, Brazil.
Weekly inspections were carried out in 121 accessions of the BAG to detect the occurrence of D. opuntiae and to categorize them into highly resistant (no infestation), moderately resistant (<10 colonies of D. opuntiae cladodium‑1) and susceptible (≥20 colonies of D. opuntiae cladodium‑1). There were 39 accessions highly resistant to D. opuntiae, 22 moderately resistant, and 60 accessions were susceptible.
All accessions of Opuntia sp., O. dillenii, O. leucotricha, O. robusta, O. rzedowskii, O. stricta and O. undulata are highly resistant to the pest.
Based on the survey, 76.5, 50.0, 12.5 and 9.5% of accessions of O. cochenillifera, O. joconostle, O. atropes and O. megacantha, respectively, were also highly resistant.
