Iron biofortification of the edible cactus Nopalea cochenillifera grown under hydroponic conditions

Abstract
In this study, we investigated the effect of iron (Fe) supplementation on the growth of the edible cactus Nopalea cochenillifera (L.) Salm-Dyckand and examined its Fe accumulation ability by exposing hydroponically grown cladodes of N. cochenillifera to 0, 50, or 200 ppm of Fe for 12 weeks.
Daughter cladodes emerged from the mother cladodes and continued to grow in all the three concentrations of Fe.
No inhibitory effect of Fe was observed on the growth of the daughter cladode.
A high Fe concentration in the nutrient solution greatly increased the Fe concentration in plant parts; the roots treated with 50 and 200 ppm of Fe surpassed the threshold levels for Fe hyperaccumulator plants.
As per both 50 and 200 ppm, more Fe accumulated in the mother cladode compared with the daughter cladode.
These results suggested that Fe supplementation in the nutrient solution can make Fe biofortification of edible cactus possible.
This plant has a high capacity to accumulate Fe, indicating its potential as a phytoremediation plant in an arid region, in addition to its role as a source of healthy food and fodder.
