Genetic improvement of Opuntia spp. for forage production in the Brazilian semi-arid region (review)

Abstract
The execution of a plant breeding program of the Opuntia spp. becomes a necessary tool to obtain new genotypes, with greater potential of production and with the function of raising the income of the rural properties of the Brazilian semi-arid.
In this sense, this review aims to describe the stages and strategies of the breeding program of Opuntia spp. for forage production in this region.
The program begins with the implementation of an active germplasm bank (AGB) and includes the following strategies: cultivation, evaluation, agronomic and bromatological characterization of accesses; study of genetic diversity; plant selection; hybridization; progeny test; competition trials; cultivar record; introduction of germplasm from other countries; use of biotechnology techniques; induction of mutation and polyploidy in vitro, among others, as a way to broaden the genetic basis of the crop and obtain new genotypes for use as an option within the breeding program.
The execution of hybridization is the main challenge of the breeding program, due to the different ploidy levels.
