Behaviour of Romanian pear cultivars self rooted and grafted on pear and quince rootstocks under Parallel U and Trident training systems

Six disease-resistant pear cultivars (‘Corina’, ‘Cristal’, ‘Euras’, ‘Orizont’, ‘Romcor’, and ‘Tudor’) released by Voineşti Research Station for Fruit Growing were planted in an experimental orchard in Bucharest.
The studied cultivars were interesting to be extended to a large-scale orchard for their field resistance to main pear diseases, high productivity, and fruit quality.
Trees grafted on ‘CTS 212’ quince rootstock were planted at 3.0×0.8 m (4,166 trees ha^‑1) with a Parallel U training system.
The Trident training system was used for trees grafted on ‘Farold^® 40’ pear rootstock and on self-rooted trees, in vitro propagated, planted at 3.0×1.6 m (2,083 trees ha^‑1). Comparative biometrical data for each cultivar, training system, and rootstock combination were studied. ‘Farold^® 40’ induced a higher vegetative growth in comparison with ‘CTS 212’ quince and the self-rooted pear trees.
The Trident training system offered the advantage of distributing/dividing the excessive growth into three vertical axes.
All the studied cultivars produced many short fruiting shoots (spurs and dards) except for ‘Orizont’, where the long shoots, brindles, and offshoots were predominant.
Yield and some fruit quality parameters were analysed.
High yield was obtained by most of the cultivars grafted on quince, ‘Euras’ and ‘Romcor’ reached values between 27.0 and 28.0 t ha^‑1. Further research is needed for fruit quality and productivity parameters for each cultivar correlated to rootstocks’ training system.
