Abstract
Projected warmer temperatures due to climate change will affect the dormancy cycle, which determines the timing and quality of bud break.
An absence of chilling can hinder dormancy development, negatively impacting fruit production; and warmer temperatures in spring advance blooming dates, increasing the risk of frost damage.
Existing models to predict time of bud break were developed based on experimental work with a particular fruit tree species, however, they are used to make predictions in other species, omitting model re-parametrisation and assuming an equal response to temperature.
We developed cultivar-specific bud break models using excised apple shoots to investigate how two apple cultivars, ‘Braeburn Mariri Red’ and ‘Galaxy Gala’, would respond to high temperatures during the ecodormancy phase.
Results showed that after fulfilling chilling requirement, an increase of 1°C in forcing temperature could advance bud break more than 2 days in both cultivars.
Models were used to simulate heatwave events, which indicated a higher sensitivity of ‘Braeburn Mariri Red’ to warmer temperatures.
The models and simulations created a valuable tool to improve our understanding of how two commercially important apple cultivars would behave under different climate scenarios.
