Abstract
New orchard technologies involve more mechanical work and less labor, and testing 2D canopies such as Vertical Axis and Trident/candlesticks becomes important for studying cultivar/rootstock expression in peach and nectarine crops for further orchard extension.
The two training systems were tested for 14 peach and 16 nectarine cultivars planted in an experimental orchard in Bucharest.
Trees were grafted on Myrobalan 29C, Saint Julien A, Adesoto, and GF677 rootstocks and planted at 4.0×1.5 m for the Vertical Axis and 4.0×2.0 m for Trident training systems, respectively.
For each cultivar/rootstock combination and training system, tree vigour expressed as tree height, trunk cross-sectional area, total and average shoot length was measured.
Yield and yield efficiency were also determined.
At the commercial harvest moment, several fruit characteristics such as average fruit weight, flesh firmness, the content in total soluble sugars and dry matter, and titrable acidity were measured.
Trident training system led to higher values compared to Vertical Axis for trunk cross-sectional area and total annual vegetative growth, but yield and yield efficiency varied according to combination cultivar/rootstock.
For the analyzed peach cultivars, cultivars grafted on Adesoto rootstock presented higher yields (t ha-1) on Trident system while GF677 rootstock on Vertical Axis.
No correlation between the training system and rootstock vigour was observed for the nectarine cultivars.
The Vertical Axis training system led to an earliness in total soluble solids accumulation in peach fruits.
Further analysis continues for a significant correlation between system training, cultivar/rootstock, and yield, respectively, fruit quality parameters, important for large-scale orchard production recommendation.
