Abstract

Air-assisted sprayers are commonly used for pest management in perennial specialty crops.
However, with the ongoing transition to modern orchard systems, conventional spraying types of equipment are known to cause off-target spray drift, human exposure to chemicals and associated adverse environmental impacts, soil compaction, and dependency on the ground condition.
In recent years, a fixed spray delivery system has thus been researched extensively as one of the solutions to apply pesticides to the deciduous crops grown in modern orchard systems.
These systems can potentially be used for crop loss mitigation due to frost and heat stress.
This article, therefore, reviews state-of-art fixed spray delivery systems.
Discussion is focused on system configuration optimization, automation, biological efficacy pertinent to insect and pest management, as well as use of the optimized systems for frost mitigation and heat stress management in deciduous crops.
This paper also emphasizes additional research needs of the fixed spray application technologies for large-scale implementation and commercial adaptation.
