Precision orchard management in digital agriculture era

Abstract

Technological interventions are needed to effectively manage the convectional as well as transitioning orchard systems.
Increasing production costs, labor shortage, and rapidly changing seasonal weather patterns further emphasize the interventional need.
Also, demand for high-quality chemical residue residue-free produce has added extra scrutiny to how specialty tree fruits are produced for the fresh market.
Coincidentally, technological landscape is also evolving rapidly, allowing development of intelligent automated solutions to address some of the above issues.
This study aims to provide an overview of pertinent technologies being developed and commercialized for managing todays orchard systems.
Discussed are the advances in-field, ground, and aerial remote sensing technologies for monitoring crop physiological changes and key stressors in the orchard environment, as well as the direct translation of such data for precision crop inputs management through smart/automated systems.
