Monitoring and containment measures to prevent the spread of Ralstonia solanacearum tomato bacterial wilt in processing tomato industries preliminary work study 2021

Abstract
Ralstonia solanacearum, a soil born bacteria responsible for bacterial wilt disease in hundreds of plant species, is a while distributed spoilage pathogen with high economic importance for many agricultural crops, invading roots from the soil and rapidly colonizing the xylem vessels.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of the washing step in tomato processing in preventing the spread of R. solanacearum through the process water, allowing the possible use of tomatoes coming from outbreaks of infested fields.
An experimental controlled washing operation of infected products was performed in SSICA during the tomato campaign 2021. Samples completely infected and others with a specific mixing dilution made with healthy tomato were used, followed by the biological treatment of the resulting process washing water with different dosage of sodium hypochlorite and different contact time, in order to finally evaluate the presence of the pathogen in the water samples before and after the wastewater treatment plant.
The absence of R. solanacearum was confirmed in all samples, even before the wastewater treatment plant and including all dosages of NaClO. In contrast, the M.O.T. (materials other than tomatoes) collected from the first processing washing and cleaning operations, showed the presence of the bacteria DNA. This work represent the first step in a three years study that will complete the statistical significance of the trials.
