Effects of regulated deficit irrigation on total soluble solids evolution in processing tomato

Abstract
The lack of water and the current rules concerning water use have generated new strategies to improve water use efficiency.
The demands of the industry to obtain higher quality, without a loss of production, require new agricultural techniques aimed to reach a better control of the water use in agricultural management with the goal of best yield with high quality and reduce irrigation water.
Evaluate strategies based on deficit irrigation in situations of limited availability of water allow to improve water productivity in horticulture.
However, it is necessary to know the best moment and how it influences the accumulation of °Brix in tomato fruit.
This study aimed to evaluate the response of total soluble solids evolution, in different tomato cultivars, at water stress.
The field research was conducted in 2019 in commercial farms of PRONAT cooperative society partners in TOMAVIT project.
The statistical design was split-plot, where the main factor was the irrigation treatment and the second factor the cultivar.
Two different irrigation strategies were used: Full-irrigation (FI) and Regulated deficit irrigation (RDC) and nine cultivars (three with high °Brix level, three with low °Brix level and three of cherry tomato) were studied.
The °Brix values were measured throughout the fruit ripening cycle, in different moments (green, pink, red and over-matured). The data obtained indicate that the maximum °Brix was obtained in pink moment.
Although the deficit irrigation affects °Brix accumulation depends on each cultivar.
In some cultivars, the difference caused by the concentration of °Brix appears quickly, and in others, it is only observed when the fruit is ripe.
The results indicate the need to carry out a study of each cultivar when establishing deficit irrigation strategies to improve the concentration of °Brix degrees.
