Abstract
Economically successful production of processing tomato is only possible with irrigation, and tomato is a good indicator for weather conditions, because its long growing season.
Water savings can be achieved if we apply smart irrigation strategies such as deficit irrigation.
We cannot reach the potential maximum yields this way, but soluble solids content (SSC) of fruit will rise and provide better fruit quality.
The goal is to reach adequate SSC yields and save irrigation water.
Ten years (2007-2016) of open field experiments were carried out to study the effect of different water supply on the SSC (Brix, Brix yield) of processing tomatoes (Brigade F1, Brixsol F1, Uno Rosso F1) on the Experimental Farm of the Institute of Horticulture, Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Siences, in Gödöllő, Hungary.
During the series of experiments, Hungarian weather and extremism were also very diverse.
Irrigation had a significant negative (R2=0.58) effect on SSC of individual fruits, and a weak relationship on SSC yield (R2=0.18) according to regression curves influenced by water supply.
High SSC yield calculated between 300 and 450 mm water supply, and potential SSC yield is around 5.0 t ha‑1 in Hungary.
