Abstract
Micropropagation make possible the production of large quantities of uniform and disease-free plants in short time.
Tissue culture needs an extremely limited numbers of certified mother plants, kept in screen house in soilless condition.
Self-rooted rootstocks and varieties can be produced in vitro and growth in greenhouse by a nursery cycle entirely made in a protected environment.
Currently, fruit grafted plants are produced using in vitro propagated rootstocks, but scions are achieved from mother plants grown in fields, covered by anti-insect’s net.
Producing grafting material throughout micropropagation and using green grafting “ex vitro” technology could ensure a high quality final grafted plants production, both from agronomic and healthy point of view mainly because the whole process is carried out in a protected and soilless environment.
The Vitroplant Italia research group has developed protocols for producing plants grafted with this technology validated on various species: kiwifruit, grapevine, walnut, hazelnut, chestnut, olive, pistachio.
Industrialize and making these techniques economically viable become the challenge that nursery companies must set up to increase their quality standards.
Besides further studies about different technological approaches are needed to obtain reliable protocols both in nursery and in the field.
