Abstract
The continuous release from breeding programs of new cultivars to the market is allowing a dynamic process of cultivar renewal, with an increase in the multiplication of new cultivars and a growing diffusion within national territories and internationally.
In addition, the expansion of fruit trees to new growing areas, together with the effects of climate change, is favoring the appearance of previously non-existent pests and diseases.
This situation is aggravated by the presence in the market of illegally multiplied cultivars, without sanitary control, which are frequently infected by viruses, bacteria and fungi.
On the other hand, in many cases there is no guarantee that verifies the genetic origin of the plant material.
The production and cultivation of certified plants would greatly reduce these risks for the growers, who would have the genetic and sanitary guarantee of the cultivar they are growing.
At CEBAS-CSIC in Murcia, we are very aware of the need to start from high-quality plant material, in order nurseries and growers can be more competitive, and the consumers finally have a product of the highest quality.
For this reason, in 2017 we began the process of certifying our new cultivars following Spanish regulations, under the control of the authorities.
We currently have certified six self-compatible almond cultivars (‘Antoñeta’, ‘Marta’, ‘Penta’, ‘Makako’, ‘Florida’, ‘Alaska’) and 12 apricot cultivars (‘Rojo Pasión’, ‘Murciana’, ‘Dorada’, ‘Mirlo Anararanjado’, ‘Valorange’, ‘Cebas-57’, ‘Tardorange’, ‘Primorosa’, ‘Micaelo’, ‘Deseo’, ‘Capricho, and ‘Cebasred’), all of them characterized by self-fertility and high fruit quality.
Most of them are resistant to sharka (PPV). All these new cultivars are available for nurseries.
In this work, the main characteristics of these cultivars are presented.
