Potencial de los recursos genéticos de mangos (Mangifera indica L.) locales en la República Dominicana

Abstract
In 2020-2023, 195 mango trees (Mangifera indica L.) reproduced by seed, generally planted in backyards and roads were evaluated.
In the samples collected, some of the trees are propagated and marketed locally and for export, such as the cultivars ‘Mingolo’, ‘Banilejo’, ’Gota de Oro’ and ‘Crema de Oro’ among others.
Its objective was to characterize the potential of mango genetic resources in five provinces in the southern part of the Dominican Republic.
The characteristics of the evaluated cultivars were identified in order to allow the installation of improved germplasm banks with potential that could be used in future crop genetic improvement programs.
This work seeks to establish strategies for the conservation and use of local mango resources, which would allow us to quantify the diversity and degree of recombination of the species over time as potential carriers of genes for resistance to pests and diseases, among other characteristics.
Morphological characteristics at the field level and organoleptic characteristics of the fruits were evaluated in the laboratory of the Bani Fruit Grove Experimental Station of the Dominican Institute of Agricultural and Forestry Research (IDIAF). For characterization, the book of descriptors for mango International Plant Genetic Resources Institute (IPGRI) was used.
To collect field data, a form and GPS were used to locate the tree where the sample was taken.
Five fruits were taken per plant and transferred to the laboratory for evaluation.
It was a quantitative descriptive study.
The morphological variables measured were weight, length, and diameter and the organoleptic were pH and °Brix of the fruits. 93% (181) trees of the analyzed samples were in the provinces of San Cristóbal and Peravia; and the remaining 7% (14) in the provinces of Santo Domingo, Azua and San Juan.
It was determined that there are trees that vary in names in geographical areas, morphology (size and shape) and organoleptic (color and flavor) of the fruit and tolerance to pests and diseases.
It was observed that 10% of the fruits vary in length from 7 to 17 cm and that the fruits collected in the Peravia province have a weight between 300 and 360 g and a °Brix in % of 14-18.1, which meets the standard quality for the market.
Among these cultivars are ‘Mingolo’, ‘Puntica’, ‘Amarillo’ and ‘Fabricó’. On the other hand, most of the fruits collected and evaluated in the province of San Cristóbal do not meet the quality standards for the market, mainly due to their small size and °Brix probably due to the climatic variations of both areas.
This results in some being used for processing in agroindustry.
Such is the case of the ‘Banilejo’ mango, which shows that the mangoes studied have the characteristics for genetic improvement due to the high diversity of genotypes of local mangoes, which hope to be characterized and used in a sustainable way.
