Abstract
The large number of seeds in some blueberry cultivars significantly affects their fresh food quality.
Seedlessness has been achieved in many fruits to make them taste better.
Until now, there is still limited data on seedlessness in blueberries.
In this study, six hybrid crosses of tetraploid highbush cultivars were obtained by using the hexaploid ‘Pink Lemonade’ as the male parent with the flowering period near to the high bushes.
After pollination, except the hybrid incompatibility in ‘O’Neal’, the fruit setting rates in ‘Chandler’, ‘Legacy’, ‘Sweetheart’, and ‘Jewel’ were 18.06, 87.23, 95.52, and 95.56%, respectively.
By using the naturally open-pollinated fruits as the control check (CK), the fruit setting rate of the hybrid cross ‘Primadonna’ × ‘Pink Lemonade’ could similarly reach a maximum of 100% and ripen normally.
Compared with their naturally open-pollinated CK fruits, fruit enlargement in ‘Legacy’ was significantly inhibited and the fruit size was smaller, while seedless fruits like ‘Sweetheart’ showed delayed ripening, premature senescence, and smaller fruit size.
Seedless fruits of ‘Jewel’ mainly exhibited uneven expansion and smaller size.
The ratio of seedlessness in the five crosses uniformly reached 100%, which may be due to their differentiated ploidy level.
All the five seedless hybrid fruits were smaller than naturally open-pollinated CK fruits in fruit diameters, single fruit weight, and soluble solid contents.
The contents of vitamin E, anthocyanin, total flavonoids, and total phenols in the seedless fruits of ‘Primadonna’ × ‘Pink Lemonade’ were significantly higher than those in the seeded CK fruits.
Therefore, the crosses between ‘Pink Lemonade’ and highbush cultivars could produce seedless fruits and revealed different fruit characteristics. ‘Primadonna’ is the sole female parent bearing seedless fruits with high fruit-setting rate, good compatibility, and higher nutritional quality compared with naturally open-pollinated fruits.
