Abstract
Characteristics of seed development, main hormone content, and nutritional quality of mature fruits during fruit enlargement were compared toward the hybrid fruit from the rabbiteye blueberry cross of ‘Prolific’ × ‘Titan’ using ‘Prolific’ as the control (CK). The results showed that the percentage of fruit set of ‘Prolific’ CK was significantly lower than that of ‘Prolific’ × ‘Titan’ cross.
The morphological observation of seed development of the developing hybrid fruit of ‘Prolific’ × ‘Titan’ showed that the hybrid seeds began to shrink after 22 days of pollination (DAP), and the seeds of the hybrid fruit shriveled and browned at 28 DAP. Finally, the seeds aborted completely at 48 DAP and the fruits became seedless at 78 DAP. In contrast to the microscopic morphology of the well-developed seeds of ‘Prolific’ CK, the basal endostalks of the ‘Prolific’ × ‘Titan’ seeds stopped development between 22 and 28 DAP, and the seeds could not be normally enriched.
The results showed that auxin (IAA), gibberellin (GA3), and cytokinin (CTK) reached higher levels in the hybrid fruits at 22 DAP and were significantly higher than those of CK. Besides, the fruit diameters and single fruit weight of mature hybrid fruits were lower than those of the control, but the fruits had higher hardness.
The contents of total polyphenols, soluble sugar, and vitamin C in hybrid seedless fruits of ‘Prolific’ × ‘Titan’ decreased obviously.
These results provided a basis for exploring the mechanism of hybrid seed abortion and creating seedless germplasm of blueberry.
